Airbnb transitioned its external partnership model away from a traditional public affiliate program after retiring the Airbnb Associates program on March 31, 2021. In its place, the platform currently operates through a multi-faceted referral and localized pilot system. This structure includes the Host Referral Program, the Guest Referral Program, and specialized pilot initiatives like the Host Affiliate Pilot Program, each designed with specific eligibility requirements and geographic constraints.

The Host Referral Program is the primary method for members to earn cash rewards. It incentivizes existing users to recruit new property owners, experience hosts, or service providers. To qualify for a payout, the referred host must publish an 'entire home' listing, experience, or service and complete a qualifying booking within 180 days of clicking the referral link. This program is typically capped at 25 successful referrals per host type annually. Rewards are paid out in cash directly to the referrer's payout method, distinguishing it from the credit-based system used for guests.

Conversely, the Guest Referral Program rewards users for bringing new travelers to the platform. Unlike a standard affiliate commission, these rewards are issued as Airbnb travel credits rather than cash. The program is currently restricted to a limited selection of countries, including Brazil, mainland China, India, Japan, Malaysia, and Mexico. Referrers can earn credits for up to 10 successful guest referrals per calendar year. These credits typically expire one year from issuance and are capped at a 15% discount on any single booking.

For established content creators and high-impact partners, Airbnb may offer invite-only collaborations or specialized pilot programs. One such initiative is the Host Affiliate Pilot Program, which allows selected hosts to earn fixed fees by recommending local experiences to their guests via in-app messaging. Because these programs are invitation-only or geographically restricted, they do not offer the same accessibility as a traditional open-join affiliate network. Affiliates looking for broader travel-related opportunities often use these internal referral tools alongside other third-party platforms to monetize their traffic.
